The Season 2 finale of Only Murders in the Building was quite a doozy and featured an exciting new cast member who will return for another round. Paul Rudd is the first major addition to the cast of the critically acclaimed Hulu crime comedy series.

Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen the Season 2 finale of Only Murders, but we already know who Rudd is going to play. He made a brief appearance as Ben Glenroy, the lead actor in Oliver Putnam’s (Martin Short) Broadway play who has a mysterious beef with Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin).

The episode ends with Rudd’s character collapsing dead on stage, pointing out that the show’s main trio will probably be busy solving his murder in Season 3. Convincing a big movie star to come on board was a huge deal for the show’s co-creator John Hoffman, but how did he make it happen?

“Paul has a pretty close relationship with Martin Short and he also made a film with Selena [Gomez], and she adores him. But the kicker is that Paul has revered Steve Martin since he was a kid, so all of these things came together for this very big ask,” Hoffman told Deadline.

Hoffman also revealed that Season 3 will reveal the cause of tension between Ben and Charles and all the events that led to the Broadway tragedy during the one-year time jump.
