Pay Discrepancies Arise on “The Crown”

Matt Smith and Claire Foy in "The Crown."

Even rulers of empires have to deal with commoners’ issues like gender pay gaps, so it seems.

Actress Claire Foy has garnered acclaim from both critics and audiences for her portrayal as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown.

But, it has been revealed that even monarchs get paid less than the men in their life.

Producers of the Netflix series have admitted that Matt Smith, who plays Prince Phillip, managed to negotiate a higher salary than the Breathe actress due to his role as the 11th Doctor in Doctor Who.

While no figures were divulged, Variety claimed last year that Claire earns $40,000 per episode for the $7-million an episode series.

With the series now about to enter its third season, the 33-year-old actress will be replaced by Murder on the Orient Express actress, Olivia Coleman, as Queen Elizabeth embarks on another phase of her life.

Matt’s replacement has not yet been announced, though producers have claimed that the pay discrepancy will be resolved going forward.

God save the Queen.
