HBO Max gave us one of the most talked-about shows of winter 2022 with DC’s Peacemaker, and there’s more where it came from. John Cena is getting ready to return to the titular role in this superhero series after the streamer renewed it for the second season.

Peacemaker serves as a spin-off for Gunn’s hit film The Suicide Squad and centers on one of its fan-favorite characters. Both Cena and the series creator James Gunn confirmed the show’s renewal on social media.

Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, praised James Gunn for proving his brilliance with Peacemaker and making the first original DC show a huge success. “He took this character, brought to life by the inimitable John Cena, and created an exceptional series that’s simultaneously thrilling, hilarious, and heartfelt, showcasing the humanity beneath this team of misfits living in a superhuman world,” said Aubrey in a statement.

Peacemaker premiered on HBO Max on January 13th, and the first season saw Peacemaker join forces with black ops squad Project Butterfly to target parasitic, butterfly-like aliens together. In addition to Cena, the first season also starred Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick.
