The Purge franchise will soon expand into television with an upcoming TV show which will be featured on Syfy and USA Network. Announced in April 2017, The Purge received a 10-episode, straight-to-series order with franchise creator James DeMonaco serving as a writer. Now, the series finally found its leads in Gabriel Chavarria (War for the Planet of the Apes) and Jessica Garza (Six).
According to reports, Chavarria will star as Miguel, “a U.S. Marine with a hard edge and a noble mission. After receiving a cryptic letter from his little sister, he returns to town on Purge Night, prepared to face the senseless violence in the streets alone in order to protect what he loves most — his family.”
On the other side, Garza will play the role of Penelope, “a woman who belongs to a Purge-worshipping cult. Having pledged herself to be sacrificed at the behest of their charismatic leader, Penelope’s faith is tested when she is exposed to the ghastly realities of the Purge.”
Although there are still many details left unknown about TV show, Jason Blum, the executive producer of the show, recently offered some insight into the project while talking with Den of Geek.
“We’re working on kind of exploring what it’s like to live the rest of the year in a world where you can kill someone on a certain day of the year,” said Blum. “It definitely makes you think twice if you’re driving and you give someone the finger or something like that. So we’re definitely thinking about different things that might happen in a society where killing was legal 12 hours a year.”
First The Purge movie, directed and written by DeMonaco, came out in 2013 and earned close to $90 million compared to $3 million budget. Two sequels and one prequel were also produced, all achieving commercial success despite mixed reviews by the critics.
