Lily James & Armie Hammer Retell Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca”

Armie Hammer and Lily James in "Rebecca"

Rebecca, the Ben Wheatley directed adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s classic gothic thriller novel, has gotten its first trailer.

Armie Hammer and Lily James will star in the Netflix film which follows a newly married woman (James) who arrives at the English estate of her wealthy husband Maxim de Winter (Hammer). What starts as a romance, ends up with Rebecca being haunted by the ghost of Maxim’s dead first wife, whose legacy lives on in the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas).

“She was the love of his life,” Mrs. Danvers tells the second Mrs. de Winter in the trailer. “I wonder what she would think of you — taking her husband, using her name.”

The cast also includes Keeley Hawes, Ann Dowd, Sam Riley, Tom Goodman-Hill, Mark Lewis Jones, John Hollingworth, and Bill Paterson.

Rebecca has been adapted many times for the stage and screen with Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 Oscar-winning film starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine being the most notable. The film had 11 Academy Awards nominations, which was the most that year.

Rebecca is set to be released on Netflix on October 21. Watch the trailer below.
