Robert Downey Jr. knows what it’s like to play one of Marvel’s biggest heroes, but he’ll soon get a chance to become a villain. The Oscar winner is re-joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom in the next two Avengers movies.
Downey is one of the actors responsible for building the MCU into a global phenomenon during his time as Tony Stark/Iron Man. The franchise has been struggling to reach its old glory since his exit, and he’ll try to help revitalize it as a brand-new character.
All hell broke loose after the Russo brothers stepped on stage at the San Diego Comic-Con to announce they’re bringing Doctor Doom back for two new movies – Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. A masked man wearing green joined them and took his mask off in a theatrical fashion, revealing he was none other than Robert Downey Jr.
Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will come out in 2026 and 2027 as a part of the MCU’s Phase Six, and it remains to be seen if Downey will make a cameo as Doctor Doom in any films leading up to them. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the most obvious choice because Doctor Doom is one of the team’s main villains, but the footage unveiled at Comic-Con didn’t give us any hints about his potential appearance.
