After Rex Harrison (1967) and Eddie Murphy (1998, 2001) brought the iconic character of Doctor Dolittle to the big screen, it is time for Robert Downey Jr. to give it a go. Downey Jr. will star as a titular character in the upcoming Universal’s movie The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle and has just revealed an exciting voice cast that will be joining him on the project.

The Iron Man star went to his Twitter profile and announced that Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, John Cena, Rami Malek, Craig Robinson, Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour and Carmen Ejogo will all lend their voices to the animals featured in the movie. It was previously announced that Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, Emma Thompson and Ralph Fiennes will also be doing voice roles on The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle. Antonio Banderas and Martin Sheen will be playing live-action characters alongside Robert Downey Jr.

Downey Jr. recently spoke about the filming the movie with Entertainment Weekly saying that he is “having a good time”. The movie is currently scheduled for release on April 12, 2019, with Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) writing and directing.

The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle will be based on the second book in the Hugh Lofting’s Doctor Dolittle series which follows an eccentric doctor who can talk with animals. The book has been already partially adapted in 1967’s movie Doctor Dolittle and 1998’s reboot.
