In a surprising move, Ruby Rose has decided to leave the CW’s Batwoman ahead of Season 2.

The series will go on, but they’ll be looking to cast a new lead. Rose was the first gay lead character, male or female, of a live-action superhero series. The show is committed to casting another LGBTQ actress in the role.

The reason for the actresses’ exit is unclear, “I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” said Rose in a statement. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew, and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”

Back in September, Rose had emergency surgery for two herniated discs after sustaining injuries from a stunt she did while filming Season 1. A source told Variety that her decision to leave “had nothing to do with her health or injury.”

Batwoman was renewed by the CW for a second season in January.
