Sorry Danny DeVito fans, someone else got to voice everyone’s favorite Pokemon character. Hollywood Reporter has learned that Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds is set to join the cast of the upcoming live-action Pokemon movie Detective Pikachu, and will lend his voice to the titular character. Previously, Justice Smith (The Get Down) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) were also revealed as the cast members.
Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is attached as a director, with the filming scheduled to start in January 2018 in London. Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) wrote the script. The studio is yet to reveal the release date for the movie.
The movie will be based on the Pokemon spin-off game titled Great Detective Pikachu, which was launched in 2016. In the game, a young boy named Tim Goodman encounters a talking Pikachu and together they solve various mysteries. The story of Detective Pikachu movie will revolve around the character played by Justice Smith, who will team up with Pikachu and “sassy journalist” played by Kathryn Newton in order to find his kidnapped father.
Previously, it was reported that the studio is looking for an A-list actor to star in the movie, with names of Dwayne Johnson, Hugh Jackman, Mark Wahlberg and Ryan Reynolds being at the top of the list. Anyone who is familiar with work of Ryan Reynolds will agree that he was the best choice of the bunch. Pokemon fans, on the other hand, had their own idea of the perfect fit for the role. They rallied up and tried to convince the studio to give Danny DeVito the gig and even started a petition.
