Sam Raimi is in final negotiations to helm the sequel to Doctor Strange.

The Spider-Man (2002) director is in talks to take over as director in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for Marvel.

Raimi is set to take over the gig following Scott Derrickson’s departure from the project. Derrickson exited the project due to creative differences, but he remains as an executive producer.

The sequel, which was announced at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, was described by the then director as “the first scary MCU film.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled for release on May 7, 2021.

Variety was first to report the news.
