For the last ten years, Marvel fans have been insisting on a Black Widow standalone feature. People expected an origins movie and so naturally, Marvel chose to set Black Widow’s story in 2016, post-Captain America: Civil War and pre-Endgame.

The story will explore a conspiracy theory related to Natasha’s mysterious past. In an interview with Empire, director Cate Shortland revealed that the film will see Johansson welcoming Midsomar star Florence Pugh to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and “hand over the baton” to her.

“[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,” Shortland said. “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

Black Widow is due to be released in movie theaters October 28.
