Most ships in the Star Trek franchise tend to be led by one captain throughout the whole series but it seems Discovery is an exception to that rule. In two seasons, the ship has already had 2 captains – Captain Gabriel Lorca and Captain Christopher Pike and in the 3rd season, another captain will sit in the commanding chair.

The show’s executive producer, Michelle Paradise, has revealed this fact during a CBS panel at this year’s Television Critics Association Press Tour. I will remind that in our finale, as Pike was leaving, he said, ‘We are going to need to choose a new captain.’ Saru said, ‘Let’s put a pin in that and see what happens.’ Discovery will need a captain. The pin will need to come out. We will need to address that in the story,” said paradise.

In the second season’s finale, the ship traveled 930 years into the show’s future, while the captain, Pike, was left behind– so it seems the writers will indeed have to find a new character to captain the ship.

Two of the leading candidates for the position are Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) who was a first officer in her past and Commander Saru ( Doug Jones), who was an acting captain in several occasion. Will one of them rise to the leadership or will the writers choose to introduce a new character to the roster?
