Selena Gomez is currently plotting her fourth studio album, and it will be quite a departure from her last LP Rare. The Grammy-nominated singer opened up about her next album in a recent cover story with Vogue Mexico and said it will feature “no sad songs”.

Gomez told the magazine that freedom will be the main topic of her new album, and added it will be filled with songs that are happy and encouraging because she was in a good place while writing it.

“I didn’t have anything to write about because I’m so used to writing sad girl music. And I love a song like that, but I wasn’t going through something that was breaking me down… I want to try to find ways to make good pop music, with a message that really means something,” said Gomez.

She described her upcoming album as a “real pop record” with an R&B moment, which will explore how it feels like to break from the constraints she had when she was 20.

The singer’s 2020 album Rare tackled the themes of self-empowerment, self-love, and self-worth and produced singles “Lose You to Love Me”, “Look at Her Now”, and “Rare”.
