It’s been 30 years since RoboCop hit theaters in 1987, but many critics still regard it as one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. Two sequels and a remake were released since, but neither has managed to regain the glory of the original. Now, it looks like fans could finally get the proper continuation of RoboCop story after all.
The writer of 1987’s original, Ed Neumeier, recently revealed that he is working with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) on a developing a new sequel which would be a continuation of the first movie.
“We’re not supposed to say too much,” Neumeier said in an interview with Zeitgeist. “There’s been a bunch of other Robocop movies and there was recently a remake. [But] I would say this would be kind of going back to the old Robocop we all love, starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie in my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old-school thing.”
Upon its release, RoboCop received positive reviews from the critics and was regarded as one of the best films in 1987. The movie was set in the near future and focused on a murdered police officer who was revived by a tech company as a cyborg.
A sequel was made in 1990, with the majority of the cast returning to reprise their roles, but it didn’t achieve a great success. The third movie from 1993 featured just a fraction of the original cast and received overall negative critics.
A remake of RoboCop was released in 2014, with mixed reviews and earning $240 million at the box office. It was reported in 2015 that a sequel to the remake is planned, but since then there were no updates on the status of the movie.
