Many of Patricia Highsmith’s novels have been adapted into hit movies and her own life is now getting a similar treatment. Shailene Woodley landed the lead role in The Murderous Miss Highsmith, a biopic loosely based on the life of the famed author.

This project will reimagine Highsmith’s life as a horror movie by exploring her fascination for gruesome murders, and a doomed relationship with two women that influenced the course of her life, just before she wrote her seminal novel The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Memento will launch sales ahead of the Cannes market, and they described this project as a new take on the biopic genre that will definitely leave a mark on the audience.

“This is such a unique way to explore someone’s legacy, while implementing their world into their life story. The script goes from idyllic Italian settings to gruesome murder fantasies with a strong inspiration from her work,” reads the studio’s official statement.

Shailene Woodley will appear in Dumb MoneyFerrari, and To Catch a Killer later this year, and she’s recently been cast in the murder mystery Killer Heat alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Richard Madden. She’ll be in pretty good company on the set of The Murderous Miss Highsmith, with Cara Delevingne (Carnival Row) and Noémie Merlant (Portrait Of A Lady On Fire) joining her in supporting roles.
