If you spent the last few months waiting for Shawn Mendes to share new music, we’ve got some good news for you. He finally dropped his first single of the year – a catchy track called “If I Can’t Have You”.

The black and white video isn’t exactly plot-driven, but it’s still pretty great. It shows Mendes lounging on a couch, playing the piano, and even running on a treadmill. Despite its somber atmosphere, the offbeat tone of this song makes it fun to watch.

Shortly after dropping the video, Mendes did an interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe and discussed his new music. The Canadian pop sensation admitted he wrote around 45 songs in the last six months, but this was the one that everyone immediately vibed with.

“It’s a confident pop record – is what it is – and it’s clearly that for me. I am going through this phase right now where I’m testing out all the styles of music that I can possibly be doing, and pop is, like, what is in my blood – no pun intended,” said Shawn Mendes.
