Shonda Rhimes’ Historical Drama “Bridgerton” Gets Its First Trailer

Adjoa Andoh and Regé-Jean Page in "Bridgerton"

Netflix has released the teaser trailer for Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton, which is based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling series of novels.

The eight episodes series revolves around the elusive Lady Whistledown, voiced by Julie Andrews, the author of gossip newsletter Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers. The paper has been released during recent years’ social seasons and this year, she’s naming names.

In the trailer she says, “You do not know me and never shall, but be forewarned, dear reader: I certainly know you.” She continues saying,  “We shall discover which young ladies might succeed at securing a match. Let it be known, if there’s a scandal, I shall uncover it and share every last detail.”

The series follows Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) making her debut onto the “competitive marriage market”. While she hopes to find true love, Lady Whistledown’s writing negatively affects her reputation and leaves her into an arrangement with the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), a committed bachelor and the “catch” of the season.

Also in the cast are Jonathan Bailey, Nicola Coughlan, Claudia Jessie, Ruby Barker, Adjoa Andoh, Golda Rosheuvel, Luke Thompson, Luke Newton, Ruby Stokes, Will Tilston, Florence Hunt, Ruth Gemmell, Bessie Carter, Harriet Cains, Polly Walker, Ben Miller, Sabrina Bartlett, Martins Imhangbe, and Lorraine Ashbourne.

This is the first scripted Shondaland series to launch under Shonda Rhimes’ nine-figure, multi-year overall deal with Netflix. The series was created by Chris Van Dusen, who also serves as showrunner.

Bridgerton debuts on Netflix on December 25.
