“Significant Character” to Die in Season 10 of “Modern Family”

Ty Burrell and Ed O'Neill in "Modern Family"

The return of Modern Family to television is closer than ever, with the tenth season of this popular ABC’s sitcom set to premiere on September 26. But, as it turns out, the upcoming episodes won’t be just laughs and giggles. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Modern Family’s co-creator Christopher Lloyd revealed that a “significant character on the series” will die in season ten.

“We’re handling some bigger life events in this season,” – Lloyd told EW. “We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”

Lloyd also added that this death will be a “moving event” and that its effects will be seen through several episodes of the new season. It is hard to believe that the creators would kill off one of the main characters, but stranger things have happened. We will have to wait several more weeks in order to find out.

Modern Family first premiered in 2009, focusing on the lives of Jay Pritchett, owner of a closet company, and his big and sometimes dysfunctional family. Besides Ed O’Neill, who portrays the character of Pritchett, the rest of the cast includes Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Ariel Winter, Sarah Hyland, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons and Jeremy Maguire.

The sitcom became a success with both critics and the audience, winning numerous awards in the process including 22 Emmy awards from 75 nominations and one Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
