Space Jam 2 will be a reboot and not a sequel.

The follow-up to the 1996 live-action movie which starred Michael Jordan will be directed by Terence Nance, who directed Random Acts of Flyness’. People assumed that Space Jam 2 would be a sequel to the original cult classic but speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Maverick Carter has revealed that it will actually be a reboot.

Carter, filmmaker and LeBron James’ childhood friend said: “There’s already been one that was good, we gotta make a film that’s great.”

He also admitted that he hopes Michael Jordan will consider returning, seeing as he starred in the original.

“Hopefully there will be a role for Michael if he wants it… But Michael Jordan is Michael Jordan,” he said. “It doesn’t matter [if LeBron] calls him, he’s gonna do what the hell he wants, which he has earned that right to do.”

He added: “LeBron and Michael are not sitting around talking about Space Jam.”

Production for Space Jam 2 is set to commence in 2019.
