Squid Game has become a true sensation since debuting on Netflix last month, and viewership numbers reflect its popularity. The streaming giant reported that the Korean survival drama drew 111 million views since its release, becoming their most-watched show to date.
Squid Game attracted this impressive number of viewers through the first 28 days on the platform, following its premiere on September 17th. By doing so, it broke the record previously held by the period drama Bridgerton, with 82 million households within its first 28 days.
Squid Game centers on a group of cash-strapped people, who accept an invitation to compete in a series of children’s games for a tempting prize, only to learn they have deadly consequences.
It was originally conceived as a mini-series, but its enormous success raised questions about a potential second season. Its future is still hanging in the air according to its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, but there’s hope for a follow-up.
“I don’t have well-developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2.’ It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors,” Hwang Dong-hyuk told Variety.
