It earned $162 million domestically and $194.3 million internationally during its opening weekend alone, scoring the biggest opening ever for a film helmed by a female director.
Three weeks later, Barbie is still breaking records, and it’s currently the second second-highest-grossing film of 2023, with over $1 billion earned.
Warner Bros’ Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution, and Andrew Cripps, president of international distribution, are as impressed by these numbers as we are, and they praised the team behind this film for making it happen.
“This is a watershed moment for Barbie, and no one but Greta Gerwig could have brought this cross-generational icon and her world to life in such a funny, emotional, and entertaining story, one that is resonating with all four quadrants of moviegoers and literally turning the entire world pink,” said the duo in a statement.

Things go sideways once they leave the picture-perfect Barbie Land behind, and the duo is forced to face reality while dealing with a full-on existential crisis, all while surrounded by a bunch of clueless humans.
In addition to Robbie and Gosling, the star-studded cast of this highly-anticipated project will also include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Nicola Coughlan, Dua Lipa, and Helen Mirren. Greta Gerwig directed the film and co-wrote it with Noah Baumbach after Robbie convinced her to come on board.
The new trailer also gave us the first snippet of Dua Lipa’s new song “Dance the Night” and a new version of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” featuring Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj. Charli XCX, Ava Max, Tame Impala, and Haim also wrote music for the film’s splashy soundtrack.

]]>Emma Mackey disused the experience of working on this project with Empire Magazine and dropped some hints about the role she’ll play in the film.
“Right in the beginning, we had a sleepover for the Barbies, which would involve playing games with Scott [Evans] and Ncuti [Gatwa]. I don’t play games usually, because I get so competitive and angry. But Scott and I were top of the game,” said Mackey.
Judging by her statement, she’s set to play one of the iterations of Barbie, and it’s believed that Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, and Hari Nef will do the same. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will portray Barbie and Ken, while the rest of the cast includes America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
Mackey also disused the experience of working with Gerwig with Empire, describing her as “invested and precise” and “so childishly delighted by what she’s doing.” Barbie marks the follow-up to her adaptation of Little Women and it’s set to be released on July 21, 2023.

]]>Margot Robbie’s reputation as a blonde bombshell naturally made her the perfect fit to bring Mattel’s doll to life in the upcoming film from Greta Gerwig.
Not only will the Suicide Squad actress be starring in the titular role, but she will be producing the feature as well. The Australian described the project as “Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”
And apparently, that now includes Ryan Gosling (how did they know?!)
The La La Land star is in final negotiations to portray Barbie’s love interest, Ken.
According to Deadline, Gosling had initially passed on the role, but reconsidered once his schedule opened up following a delay in the movie’s pre-production process.
Filming is scheduled to begin next year.

]]>The possibility of Gerwig’s involvement in this project was first reported all the way back in 2019, and Robbie finally made things official during her recent interview with British Vogue.
“[With Barbie] comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear Barbie and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ’Oh, well, maybe I don’t,’” said Robbie.
According to Variety, Gerwig will co-write the script with her frequent collaborator Noah Baumbach. The production will kick off in early 2022, while the film itself is eyed for a 2023 release date. The creative duo previously co-wrote the movies Frances Ha and Mistress America, both starring Gerwig. She’s next set to appear in Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel White Noise.

It was announced last year that the Suicide Squad actress, Margot Robbie, would be involved in the project, both producing and starring as the blonde bombshell who has been a companion to girls the world over.
Now the Warner Bros.’ production appears to have secured itself a director and a writer.
The real-life couple, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, are reported to be taking on the respective roles, with the Lady Bird director taking on a script penned by The Squid and the Whale filmmaker.
This would be Gerwig’s third venture in the directing chair following Lady Bird and Little Women which is currently in production.
It is not yet known which storyline Barbie would follow, but we bet life in plastic will be fantastic.

The Aussie actress will be putting her blonde hair and blue eyes to good use as she is expected to take on the role of another blonde bombshell — Barbie!
The film, produced by Barbie manufacturer, Mattel, was originally set to star I Feel Pretty actress, Amy Schumer.
After Amy was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts, Oscar winner, Anne Hathaway, was attached to replace her but that didn’t work out either.
It is now likely that Margot will take over the part of the world’s most famous doll, with the Birds of Prey star also expected to produce the film which is probably headed to Warner Bros.
Barbie is expected sometime in 2020 and we can’t wait to go party (ah, ah, ah, yeah)!
