Since its premiere in 2014, Black-ish became a bona fide hit for ABC and grew into a successful franchise, but we’ll soon have to say goodbye to the Johnson family as the beloved and critically acclaimed sitcom is officially coming to an end after eight seasons.

Series creator and executive producer Kenya Barris announced its ending in an emotional Instagram post and thanked everyone who joined him on this incredible journey.

“In this day and age it is rare to get to decide when your show should come to an end, and we are grateful along with ABC to be able to make this final season exactly what we’d hoped for—and to do it with the entire and AMAZINGLY STELLAR cast coming back to close this chapter out with us the right way!” wrote Barris on Instagram.

Black-ish followed the trials and tribulations of an upper-middle-class African-American family and shone a light on many important social issues through their lens. Its ensemble cast included Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, and Marsai Martin.

In addition to announcing the final season of Black-ish, ABC also recently canceled its spin-off Mixed-ish. The future of Grown-ish remains uncertain since it airs on Freeform and not ABC.

ABC is currently developing a spinoff of the comedy titled Old-ish that will focus on Dre Johnson’s (Anthony Anderson) parents Earl “Pops” Johnson (Laurence Fishburne) and Ruby Johnson (Jenifer Lewis).

Black-ish’s creator Kenya Barris will write and produce the project which will center around Ruby and Earl as they try to make their relationship work after moving to a gentrified neighborhood of Los Angeles while meeting characters who represent the old and new faces of the community.

In addition to Black-ish, ABC also airs Mixed-ish, which tells Rainbow Johnson’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) childhood story, and Freeform airs the spinoff series Grown-ish, which centers around Zoey (Yara Shahidi) as she navigates college life.

Old-ish will be a return to ABC for Barris who left his overall deal with the network in 2018 after getting a deal with Netflix. While with Netflix, he’s created the single-cam comedy series #BlackAF which was picked up for a second season.

Black-ish, ABC’s praised comedy, is getting new leadership. The show’s executive producer, Courtney Lilly has been named the new showrunner and he will be responsible for it in the 6th season.

The show former showrunners Kenny Smith and Jonathan Groff will remain as consulting producers and will focus on producing other projects on ABC studios.

Lilly, who is a writer on Black-ish since its beginning, is a former reporter for the Providence Journal-Bulletin, won a Nickelodeon Writing Fellowship in 2000 and became a TV writer. He wrote on Everybody Hates Chris and Arrested Development. He is also a co-executive producer on Undateable and co-producer on The Cleveland Show.

This fall, a prequel series for black-ish, mixed-ish, is scheduled to premiere on the network and a spinoff series grown-ish is entering its 3rd season.

Recently, Black-ish was nominated for two Emmy Awards: Anthony Anderson was nominated for lead actor in a comedy series and costume designer Michelle R. Cole was nominated for outstanding contemporary costumes.

Our TV screens are still going to be blackish.

ABC has confirmed that Black-ish will be returning to our screens for a sixth season.

The comedy from Kenya Barris follows the African-American Johnson family and their lives in a predominately white neighborhood.

Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross head the household which includes Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, and Marsai Martin.

The renewal does not come as a surprise as Black-ish averaged 3.33 million viewers per episode during season 5.

The Johnsons have also spread to other shows, with Shahidi’s leading Grown-ish which focuses on her character’s life at college, and now Mixed-ish.

The latter will serve as a prequel to Black-ish and follow a young version of Ross’s character as her parents move to the sunburns from a hippie community.

Sounds good-ish.
