Appropriate follows members of the Lafayette family, returning to their home in Arkansas following the death of the family’s patriarch. His eldest daughter Toni (Paulson) and her brother Bo (Stoll) are forced to deal with the ghosts of their past after their estranged brother Franz appears late one night, and mysterious objects are discovered among the clutter.

Directed by Lila Neugebauer, Appropriate will also star Natalie Gold and Alyssa Emily Marvin and additional casting is yet to be announced. Fanning will make her Broadway debut in the role of River, the fiancé of the youngest of the Lafayette siblings.

Fanning’s schedule cleared up after Hulu made a shocking decision to cancel the acclaimed series The Great. She led this satirical period drama as Catherine the Great and received nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards for her performance. Although the Booksmart actress was meant to have her final performance at the end of September, she revealed that her curtain call would be on July 31 due to producers deciding “to take the show in a different direction”.

Michele confirmed her Broadway return on Instagram, saying, “A dream come true is an understatement. I’m so incredibly honored to join this amazing cast and production and return to the stage playing Fanny Brice on Broadway.”

The 35-year-old actress is no stranger to the songs made famous by Barbra Streisand as she performed almost every one of them during her time on Glee. She also expressed interest in playing the role during an interview on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen back in 2017.

“We were thinking of doing it right after Glee, but I did a lot of the songs from Funny Girl on Glee so it felt like a little soon,” Lea said at the time. “But I feel really ready to do it now, so maybe we could do it soon.”

New York governor announced that Broadway theaters will reopen to full capacity on September 14. “Broadway is a major part of our state’s identity and economy, and we are thrilled that the curtains will rise again,” he tweeted.

Theaters have been closed since March 12, 2020, and cinemas have been open for months at limited capacity, but Broadway theater owners and producers said they couldn’t operate with those restrictions and still make a profit. When Broadway was shut down, 31 productions were running including eight new shows. Some shows including a revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen won’t be returning.

“We are thrilled that Governor Cuomo clearly recognizes the impact of Broadway’s return on the city and state’s economy and the complexity of restarting an entire industry that has been dormant for over a year,” Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League said.

“Nothing beats Broadway. The theatre owners, producers, and other League members will continue to work with the NY State Department of Health and the Governor to coordinate the industry’s return and the related health and safety protocols required to do so. We remain cautiously optimistic about Broadway’s ability to resume performances this fall and are happy that fans can start buying tickets again.”

Tickets went on sale on Thursday.

CBS’ broadcast of Grease is part of the channel’s Sunday Night Movies series and will feature follow-along lyrics to the movie’s iconic tunes. Additional titles airing during Sunday Night Movies include Titanic (May 24), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (May 31).

In addition to the prior postponement of the Tony Awards, it was announced earlier this week that Broadway would remain closed until at least September 6. However, according to New York Post, insiders say the pause is likely to continue through at least winter.

Hustlers filmmaker Lorene Scafaria says she’s currently attempting to adapt her film for the stage. Scafaria revealed the news to Variety on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday night. “We’re just starting,” the 41-year-old director told the outlet. “I said it to them a few months ago that I thought it would be a good idea, that’s all. Who knows. I’m trying to develop it for the stage!”

The film followed a tight-knit clan of strip club employees — Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Cardi B, Lizzo, Keke Palmer, and Lili Reinhart, who scam money from their rich Wall Street clients amid the 2008 financial crisis. 

Back in December Lopez told Extra that a Broadway adaptation would “be amazing.”

“It really lends itself to a Broadway show, and to a live-performance show,” she told Extra. “I don’t know that I would do it. I would produce it, for sure. I don’t know. Maybe. You never know with me.”

It ran from 1971 to 2006 and featured black musicians both established and up-and-coming. The musical is set to feature a total of 20 hits songs from the show’s tenure.

Playwright Dominique Morisseau said in a statement: “Having grown up on this series,” she said, “and being immersed in the culture around it, I never knew what it took to make it the iconic staple that it is. Through the socio-political challenges both internally and externally, Don Cornelius’ uncompromised vision, and the revolutionary dance culture that the show made visible to the mainstream, there are a million handprints on what we know as Soul Train.”

“With many years of experience working directly with my father, I’m forever grateful and deeply humbled by the impact ‘Soul Train’ has had on the culture at large both here and abroad,” Tony Cornelius, Don’s’ son told Deadline. “For 37 years, and with purpose, through music, dance, and style, ‘Soul Train’ brought Love, Peace & Soul to a national audience.”

Also on board are director Kamilah Forbes and choreographer Camille A. Brown.
