Considering its incredibly successful run on both Broadway and the West End, it seemed a given that the musical would be a hit on the big screen.

But as we now know, the Tom Hooper film, starring Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, Taylor Swift, and James Corden was anything but. So poorly-received was the feature that it made only $75 million at the box office and lost Universal $114 million. 

In fact, the disappointment was so great that it prompted the creator of the stage production to do something rather out of character. 

“It was the first time in my 70-odd years on this planet that I went out and bought a dog. So the one good thing to come out of it is my little Havanese puppy,” Lloyd Webber said.

The EGOT winner has labeled the canine as an emotional support animal, even convincing an airline to let him travel with the pup. 

“The airline wrote back and said, ‘Can you prove that you really need him?’ And I said, ‘Yes, just see what Hollywood did to my musical Cats.’ Then the approval came back with a note saying, ‘No doctor’s report required.’”

The film officially opened in theatres across the United States and the United Kingdom this weekend, but Universal Pictures has announced that it will be releasing a new, updated version. 

So, what will be different? Well, the visual effects are expected to be a lot better. 

Hooper admitted in March that, despite the film’s budget being close to $100 million, the visual effects in the trailer were not quite up to scratch. It was expected that all would be sorted by the time the film was officially released, but apparently not. The move, which is reportedly being done at Hooper’s request, is unheard of for a film that is already on the circuit. 

Theatres have been asked to replace the film with the shiny, new version of Cats as soon as possible. 

We guess cats do have multiple lives, after all…

Taylor Swift has released her recording of the song she wrote with Andrew Lloyd Webber. 

Webber said of working with Swift, “I think she’s written lyrics that are first, dramatic, and secondly, it’s almost as if she’s read T.S. Eliot herself. Maybe she had because she’s so thorough and professional.”

The song about feeling an outsider will be performed by the graceful white cat Victoria (Francesca Hayward) in the film. Swift will also appear in the film as Bombalurina. 

Cats will purr its way to theaters on December 20.

The upcoming Universal Pictures and Working Title’s film adaptation has tapped some major creative talent. Multiple outlets confirm that Blankenbuehler will serve as the production’s choreographer. Blankenbuehler is best-known for his recent work as the choreographer for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton.

Cats was the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history and was the longest-running Broadway show ever from 1997 until 2006. The film is boasting a big cast including Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, James Corden, and Ian McKellen. The film will be direct by Tom Hopper from a script co-written with Lee Hall.

The Dreamgirls Oscar winner will once again put her golden pipes to good use as she takes on the role of Grizabella, while Ian and James are both Tony Award winners and Delicate singer, Taylor, has numerous Grammys under her tail.

Sounds like the making of a beautiful memory.
