This newly introduced award is meant to recognize an artist’s unwavering dedication and notable contributions to the field of independent film. Joana Vicente, Sundance Institute’s CEO, said it’s an honor to recognize Nolan with the inaugural award and described him as a prodigious artist whose singular talent and remarkable body of work have made him one of the most respected filmmakers of our time.

Nolan’s breakout hit Memento premiered at Sundance two decades ago, and he can’t wait to return to the festival.

Nolan recently set down for an interview on CinemaBlend’s podcast ReelBlend, and briefly addressed his future after Oppenheimer. When asked if he sees himself making movies for decades to come, like Martin Scorsese, or quitting after some point, like Quentin Tarantino, here’s what he had to say:

“The truth is, I understand both points of view. It’s addictive to tell stories in cinema. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s very fun. It’s something you feel driven to do, and so it’s a little hard to imagine voluntarily stopping.”

Nolan also added that he would trust his own “sense of the absolute value of a piece of work to know whether or not it should have been brought into existence.”

Nolan’s future seems unpredictable after Oppenheimer, but there are certain projects he’s not interested in making. In a separate interview with the YouTube channel Hugo Décrypte, he shot down the idea of making a television series and said he wouldn’t make another superhero film after the Dark Knight trilogy that made him a household name.

Exactly one year to the day before its release, Nolan unveiled the poster for his forthcoming flick, Oppenheimer. The movie will focus on J. Robert Oppenheimer who was known as the mastermind behind the atomic bomb. The poster featured Cillian Murphy as the titular scientist standing amidst plumes of fire and smoke, with the tagline “The world forever changes”.

Nolan chose to release the teaser trailer for Oppenheimer ahead of the screening of one of the most-anticipated films of the summer, Nope. 

Shot in black and white, the film looks to be a tense depiction of Oppenheimer’s life. The teaser features a countdown of 11 months, 24 days, 15 hours, and 29 minutes, alluding to the launch of the first nuclear weapon by the United States at 5:29 a.m. on July 16, 1945. An ominous voiceover can be heard describing Murphy’s character as “the most important man who ever lived.”
