This poignant drama has been inspired by Claire Keegan’s book of the same name, with Enda Walsh adapting it to the big screen. Tim Mielants directed Small Things Like These, which also stars Ciarán Hinds, Emily Watson, and Clare Dunne in supporting roles.
Berlinale’s artistic director Carlo Chatrian confirmed Small Things Like These as the opening film, and said it “tells the story of a man of few words, with wide open eyes, as clear as the skies of Ireland.”
The 74th Berlin International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from February 15-25, with Lupita Nyong’o serving as the jury president. Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding, Johan Renck’s Spaceman, and Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils are some of the films set to premiere in Berlin.

]]>Festival chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi described Oppenheimer as one of the most ambitious and epic films of the year and praised Murphy’s performance in this career-defining project.
“Murphy gives a stunning portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer as a conflicted scientist leading the Manhattan Project to produce the world’s first atomic bomb. For this career-best performance, we are honored to present the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor, to Cillian Murphy,” said Chandi in a statement.
Murphy has been receiving a lot of buzz since Oppenheimer came out this summer, along with his co-stars Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. and director Christopher Nolan. In addition to being met with rave reviews, Oppenheimer earned over $950 million worldwide, setting several major box office milestones along the way.
The Palm Springs Film Festival is taking place from January 4-15, and Murphy will be in pretty good company when he picks up his trophy. Poor Things’ Emma Stone has been announced as the recipient of the best actress award, while Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon will be honored with the Vanguard Award.

]]>Keegan’s novel has been described as Dickensian in scope, and it centers on Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and devoted family man. During the busy Christmas season in 1985, he discovers the startling secrets being kept by a convent that’s controlling his small Irish town.
Small Things Like These will be financed by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity, and Murphy can’t wait to join forces with this duo after admiring their work for many years.
“I’m honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Claire Keegan’s magnificent novel to the screen. We have gathered together a phenomenal team of creatives to make this film, and found exceptional partners in AE, a studio led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck,” said the Peaky Blinders actor in a statement.
Small Things Like These will also star Ciarán Hinds and Emily Watson in supporting roles. Murphy’s longtime collaborator Enda Walsh wrote the script, while Tim Mielants, who previously worked with the actor on Peaky Blinders, is coming on board as a director.

]]>Those who went to see Avatar: The Way of Water during its opening weekend were also privy to the first trailer of Oppenheimer which premieres in July 2023.
Unlike many of Nolan’s other films which are futuristic, Oppenheimer focuses on the past as it tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer who was credited with inventing the atomic bomb. The theoretical physicist led the Manhattan Project during World War II which culminated in the Trinity Test in July of 1945 when a nuclear bomb was first tested in New Mexico.
In the film, Oppenheimer is played by Cillian Murphy who is a regular in Nolan’s films. The trailer shows the titular character as a man grappling with the responsibility (and consequences) of his creation.
“They won’t fear it, until they understand it. And they won’t understand it, until they’ve used it,” Murphy says in a voiceover. “I don’t know if we can be trusted with such a weapon, but we have no choice.”
In addition to the Peaky Blinders star, Oppenheimer boasts a stellar cast that includes Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Gary Oldman, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, Josh Peck, Jason Clarke, David Dastmalchian, Alex Wolff, James D’Arcy, and many more.
Oppenheimer hits cinemas on July 21, 2023.

]]>It was announced in January that the forthcoming sixth season of the Birmingham-based series would be its final outing, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing the last of the Shelby clan.
Creator Steven Knight has confirmed that a Peaky Blinders feature film will begin production in 2023. Naturally, it be set and filmed in Birmingham.
“And that will probably be the sort of the end of the road for Peaky Blinders as we know it,” Knight said at the BFI London Film Festival.
Although there are rumors of a spin-off to the show starring Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sam Neill, Tom Hardy, Aidan Gillen, and Anya Taylor-Joy, amongst others, Knight has said that he would prefer to “pass the baton” should they go ahead.
A release date for the sixth season of Peaky Blinders has yet to be announced.

Robert Oppenheimer, often hailed as “the father of the atomic bomb.” This project will also reunite Nolan with cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema, editor Jennifer Lame, and composer Ludwig Göransson. Oppenheimer is set to premiere on July 21, 2023, and it will get a 100-day theatrical window before heading to streaming services.
What sets Oppenheimer apart from Nolan’s previous films is his decision to part ways with Warner Bros. and search for a new studio. He found a perfect partner in crime in Universal Pictures, and their chairman Donna Langley is looking forward to joining forces with the groundbreaking director.
“Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas’ films have shattered the limits of what cinematic storytelling can achieve. We are thrilled to be working alongside them on this exceptional and extraordinary project and are grateful for their shared passion and commitment to the theatrical experience,” said Langley in a statement.

]]>Just like Dunkirk, the director’s next film will focus on a seminal moment in World War II. It will center on J. Robert Oppenheimer, who played a crucial role in the development of the nuclear bomb.
Murphy’s involvement hasn’t been confirmed just yet, but his casting would make total sense since the Peaky Blinders star previously appeared in several Nolan movies. He most notably played Dr. Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow in The Dark Knight saga but also appeared in Inception and Dunkirk. He’s not attached to any major new projects following the final season of Peaky Blinders.
What makes Nolan’s next film different from all of his past projects is that it won’t be produced by Warner Bros. The Oscar-nominated director had a strained relationship with this studio ever since publicly speaking out against their decision to stream their entire 2021 movie slate on HBO Max, and he’s currently looking for a new home for this World War II biopic.
