If buddy comedies happen to be one of your favorite genres, it’s time to add The Wrecking Crew to your watch list. Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa will star in this promising project, which hails from the Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto.

It’s only been a few days since DC’s superhero movie Blue Beetle hit the theaters, but Soto already set his eyes on his next project. His buddy action comedy The Wrecking Crew is being developed by MGM and it will star two actors who are no strangers to playing superheroes: Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista and Aquaman’s Jason Momoa.

Warrior creator Jonathan Tropper penned the script for this buddy comedy, and the leading duo was in talks to star long before the SAG-AFTA strike kicked off. Plot details remain unknown, but there was a lot of interest in this film in 2021 when Bautista and Momoa originally pitched it to studios and MGM won a four-bidder battle.

Bautista and Momoa previously starred in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, and Bautista will return for its sequel later this year, after appearing in Knock at the Cabin and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. As for Momoa, he most recently starred in Fast X and The Flash and we’ll soon get to see him in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Army of Dead star Dave Bautista sent Twitter into a frenzy a few days ago when he proposed a wild idea of making a buddy cop movie with Jason Momoa. At the time, many fans really liked the suggestion but assumed it wasn’t a real project.

Well, perhaps it wasn’t back then, but it is now. During a recent appearance on The Late Late Show, Momoa revealed that he and Bautista have actually started developing the proposed buddy cop movie. He also shared that the initial pitch came via text message.

“He literally texted me four days ago, going, ‘We need to do a buddy cop film. We love each other. We are on See and Dune together.’ And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ And he said, ‘Let’s do it in Hawaii.’ And I said, ‘Let’s do it. I have an idea.’ So it’s off to the races now. We’re doing it,” Momoa told host James Corden before adding that the movie “sells itself” due to stark differences between him and Bautista.

You can check out the full bit about this intriguing project in the video below.

While Momoa didn’t go into detail acout the project, Bautista wrote in his original tweet that the film would be a “Lethal Weapon type buddy cop movie.” He also added that he would like to have Deadpool 2 director David Leitch helming the feature.

Dave Bautista is currently shooting Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 2 while also starring in the epic movie Dune and Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. Jason Momoa, who is also part of the Dune cast, has DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and fantasy comedy Slumberland as his upcoming projects.

Zack Snyder’s zombie-heist flick Army of the Dead is turning out to be another big hit for Netflix. The feature received positive reviews from critics, and the streamer expects more than 70 million households will have watched the movie in its first four weeks.

The Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista is considered to be a significant reason for the movie’s success, having delivered a convincing and likable portrayal of mercenary Scott Ward. This is impressive considering that the wrestler-turned-actor snagged the role almost by accident.

In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Bautista revealed that he and Snyder were supposed to work on an entirely different movie before the director’s agent tipped him off about the Army of the Dead.

“Originally, I wanted to do this other movie with Zack, and I ran into his agent at a party, and he told me the movie wasn’t going anywhere, but he said Zack’s next film was Army of the Dead,” said Bautista.

While considering whether he’ll join the project, Bautista had his reservations. He wanted to prove himself as an actor, and starring in another generic action role wasn’t what he had in mind. Everything changed, however, when Snyder convinced him to read the script and told him he would play Ward.

“He’s not your predictable action hero, he’s got some depth to him, some heart and some emotion. And it really was kind of a redemption story which is what I wanted,” Bautista explained.

You can check out the whole interview below.

According to reports, Snyder and Netflix are looking to parlay the success of Army of the Dead into a franchise. There is already a prequel titled Army of Thieves and animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas in the works, while the sequel is also an option.

Dave Bautista’s new movie, My Spy, was due to hit the screens in North America this weekend, on March 13, after a good opening in New Zealand and Australia this weekend. Now, STX Films announced they are pushing back the release date to next month.

This is not the first time the spy film is being delayed – it was supposed to be released in August. This time the delay aims to take advantage of a slot opening in the Family Comedy Genre after the release of the new Bond movie No Time to Die was pushed to November and Trolls World Tour took its place. This left the April 17 slot open and the producers hope will improve the movie’s performance with minimal costs.

My Spy follows Bautista as a spy who is going undercover in order to surveil a family. The family’s 9-years-old daughter, played by Big Little Lies’ Chloe Coleman, discovers him and blackmails him into teaching her his craft. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was fired by Disney earlier this year following the emergence of controversial tweets he wrote ten years ago. Now, Warner Bros. confirmed that Gunn is in discussions to write, and might even direct, the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise.

Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the Marvel franchise, has been among those who have loudly and publicly defended Gunn. He most recently voiced his support for Warner Bros and DC’s decision to hire Gunn to write and possibly direct the Suicide Squad sequel. “Where do I sign up!”, Bautista wrote on Twitter along with a link to Deadline’s confirmation of the news.

Earlier this year, Gunn publicly apologized for his tweets. He wrote: “Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.”

He added: “It’s not to say I’m better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over.”

Dave Bautista has really been making waves in Hollywood since getting his big break with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and his next project will see him taking on double duty. In addition to playing the lead role, the former WWE star will also produce his next movie Traphouse.

This action thriller will see Bautista playing undercover DEA agent, who embarks on an unexpected game of cat and mouse with a group of rebellious teenage thieves, trying to rob a dangerous cartel.

The Fast & Furious creator Gary Scott Thompson will be in charge of writing the screenplay. Bautista will produce the project alongside his longtime manager Jonathan Meisner and Signature CEO Marc Goldberg.

Traphouse is a project that we’ve been working on for years. We’re thrilled to be working with Marc and his team at Signature to bring it to life, and in Gary, we’ve found the perfect writer to infuse our original fast-paced action movie with tons of heart,” said Dave Bautista in an official statement.
