]]>About a month ahead of the festival’s opening night, Venice bosses finally shared the full lineup with the world. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Michael Mann’s Ferrari, and Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla are only some of the high-profile projects set to premiere as a part of the “in competition” program, while Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Richard Linklater’s Hit Man will premiere out of competition.
Edoardo De Angelis’s Comandante will serve as the festival’s opening film after Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers withdraw from the festival as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Several A-list stars are expected to miss the festival for this reason, but the artistic director Alberto Barbera is still certain that the red carpet will be pretty full.
“Luckily enough the consequences of this strike – which has very good motivations we can agree to – the impact is quite modest on our festival. A few stars will not be with us… We will have actors and actresses who have worked in productions that are fully independent,” said Barbera while talking to the press.
The 80th Venice International Film Festival will return to Italy between August 30 and September 9, with Damien Chazelle serving as the jury president.

]]>The film follows screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz who’s in the process of finishing writing the script for Orson Welles’ iconic film. The alcoholic screenwriter, known for his social criticism, is played by Gary Oldman. Other cast members are Tom Burke as Orson Welles, Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies, Charles Dance as William Randolph Hearst, Lily Collins as Rita Alexander, Tuppence Middleton as Sara Mankiewicz, and many more.
The movie is produced by Netflix, which is now giving us a first look at the movie—and it looks stunning. The streaming giant posted pictures of the movie on its twitter account. The pictures show highly stylized black and white pictures, which play to the director’s talent.
Howard Jack Fincher, the director’s father, wrote the script for Mank prior to his death in 2003, which makes it a passion project for Fincher. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are responsible for the movie’s score. The duo has previously worked with Fincher and won an Academy Award for The Social Network score. He also reunites with production designer Donald Graham Burt. Erik Messerschmidt, who worked with Fincher on the Netflix series Mindhunter, is the cinematographer.
Netflix is yet to confirm an official release date, but it’s expected to come out in October.

]]>Despite the fact Mindhunter was created by Joe Penhall, Fincher was one of the driving creative forces behind this project. The Netflix bosses felt it’s time to release the cast from their contracts since it’s unclear when he’ll be able to come back on board again.
“David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots. He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own,” said a Netflix spokesperson in a statement.
This doesn’t necessarily mean we’re saying goodbye to Mindhunter for good. The series is currently on an indefinite hiatus, but there’s a chance it could return in the future.
Mindhunter followed a group of FBI agents trying to solve open cases by conducting interviews with serial killers, and it starred Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv.
