The former X-Files star told Entertainment Weekly that the first thing she did after reading the script for the pilot was throw it in the trash. “I read a teeny bit of the first episode and threw it in the bin,” she told EW. “Initially I felt that it was too on the nose.”

But all that changed after Anderson’s real-life partner, creator of The Crown, Peter Morgan, read the script and set to change her mind. “Pete essentially took it out the bin and read it and loved it, and said, ‘You’re mad. This will be really good for you to do.’ I read it and I thought it was hilarious.” 

And now that Sex Education is a huge success, Anderson added: “he does keep reminding me that the success of it is all down to him.”

The X-Files and Sex Education star will play the British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in season 4 of Netflix’s royal drama. The soon premiering Season 3 chronicles the British royal family from the mid-’60s to the mid-’70s with Season 4 covering the decade thereafter. 

“She’s amazing,” says Colman who took over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Claire Foy. “The moment she opened her mouth in the read-through, you could feel everyone wanting to do a little silent ‘Yay!’ Because she was so brilliant.”

The streaming giant has renewed its critically-acclaimed British dramedy. 

The series follows Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), a highly inexperienced son of a sex therapist (Gillian Anderson) who decides to open an underground sex therapy clinic with an unlikely partner, Maeve (Emma Mackey).

According to Netflix, season one of Sex Education was watched by an estimated 40 million households within four weeks of its debut.

“The reception to season one has been so exciting. Seeing how people across the world have connected to characters that began as ideas in my head is incredible,” creator Laurie Dunn said in a statement. “I’m hugely grateful to every person that has taken the time to watch the series, and I can’t wait to continue this amazing journey.”

“Laurie Nunn has captured the awkward teenage experience with a lot of heart and humor in Sex Education,” Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, said in a statement. “Along with the Eleven team and executive producer and director Ben Taylor, she’s created a universally relatable series that has resonated with our members around the world.”

Gillian Anderson has been cast as former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. News of her casting comes a long time before fans of the series will ever actually get to see her on screen — viewers will have to wait more than a year as Season 3 of the Netflix drama hasn’t premiered yet. 

But Anderson’s casting actually hints that the fourth season will jump to the 1980s as the Iron Lady was as Britain’s Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. Season three begins in 1963 and stars Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip,  Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret and Ben Daniels as Antony Armstrong-Jones.
