The list of albums inducted this year also includes Queen Latifah’s debut effort All Hail the Queen and The Police’s final studio album Synchronicity.

When it comes to individual songs, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, John Lennon’s “Imagine”, Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven”, John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”, and Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” all made the cut.

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden revealed they’ve received over 1,100 public nominations for recordings to add to the registry this year, but they eventually settled on 25, based on their cultural, historical, and aesthetic importance.

“The national library is proud to help ensure these recordings are preserved for generations to come, and we welcome the public’s input on what songs, speeches, podcasts or recorded sounds we should preserve next,” said Hayden in a statement.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” returned to no. 1 for the third time this holiday season, logging its 11th week atop the chart. By doing so, it also extended Carey’s record for most weeks an artist spent atop the Hot 100 with 90 – and she couldn’t be happier about it!

“I can’t even handle this news.. I’m jumping up and down in the snow..! meanwhile Cha Cha is swimming around and Mutley is howling like a kid running around in circles feeling our energy,” Carey wrote on Instagram.

“All I Want For Christmas” also set a new record for the longest span atop the Hot 100 to over three years and a week, after it topped the chart on 11 separate occasions between December 21, 2019, and December 31, 2022.

But in a new autobiography, the singer revealed that she is no stranger to alternative rock. Apparently, back in 1995, Carey collaborated with the band Chick on their album Someone’s Ugly Daughter. She contributed to the writing and production of the songs as well as singing backing vocals.

“I’d bring my little alt-rock song to the band and hum a silly guitar riff. They would pick it up and we would record it immediately,” Carey writes in her book. “It was irreverent, raw, and urgent, and the band got into it. I actually started to love some of the songs. I would fully commit to my character. I was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were popular at the time. You know the ones who seemed to be so carefree with their feelings and their image. They could be angry, angsty, and messy, with old shoes, wrinkled slips, and unruly eyebrows, while every move I made was so calculated and manicured.”

The album was not a great success and it is hard to find on streaming services. However, a couple of tracks can be found on YouTube.
