Disney gave us one of their biggest box office hits in recent years with the live-action remake of The Lion King, and it was just a matter of time before they announced its sequel. That moment is finally here, and not only that, but they also announced that Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins will be in charge of bringing this project to life.

Jenkins’ previous movies include the Oscar-winning drama Moonlight and the adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel If Beale Street Could Talk.

Jenkins said he’s excited about the prospect of developing a project in The Lion King universe because he grew up with these characters in the ‘90s. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love, and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true,” he said in a statement.

Deadline described The Lion King sequel as a The Godfather: Part II, only set on the African plain. It’s expected to further explore the mythology of the beloved characters from the first film directed by Jon Favreau, which grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide and went on to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

Despite being a huge success in the global box office, the original Lion King composer has no love from the new iteration of the film, and more specifically its music.

The iconic singer-songwriter, who composed and performed a number of songs for the 1994 animated film, told British GQ of his disappointment.

“The new version of The Lion King was a huge disappointment to me, because I believe they messed the music up,” he said. “Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn’t have the same impact. The magic and joy were lost. The soundtrack hasn’t had nearly the same impact in the charts that it had 25 years ago, when it was the bestselling album of the year. The new soundtrack fell out of the charts so quickly, despite the massive box-office success.”

John also expressed his desire to have been more involved in the project.

“I wish I’d been invited to the party more,” he said of his involvement in the new feature, or rather lack thereof.

He continued: “But the creative vision for the film and its music was different this time around and I wasn’t really welcomed or treated with the same level of respect. That makes me extremely sad.”

Lion King banked more than $1 billion worldwide.

The highest grossing movie this weekend was once again Fast And Furious: Hobbs and Shaw which added 45.28 million dollars worldwide. The movie’s total gross now stands at 684.2 million dollars – 70% of that from oversees. In this the spin-off movie has surpassed Fast Five which stands at 626.1 million dollars. It now claims the 4th place in the series – a place in it is likely to stay as the 3rd place Fast and Furious 6 stands at 788.7 million dollars.

The new adapted “live” version of The Lion King has been received with mixed reviews but there is no denying the warm welcome of the box office. The remake, made by Jon Favreau, is shattering record after record.

This weekend the movie added another 20 million dollars to its domestic revenues and another 861 million dollars overseas. This brings its numbers to 473 million dollars at home and 1.334 billion dollars worldwide.

With that, the movie became the highest-grossing live-action release of Disney, excluding Marvel or Star Wars movies. Recently the movie became the 5th movie in 2019 that has passed the 1 billion dollars’ barrier. It has also become the highest-grossing live adaptation Disney has made surpassing 2017’s Beauty and the Beast.

But even if you, like many other people, consider The Lion King as an animated film it is still the highest-grossing of the studio’s history. The former film to hold that title was Frozen with 1.276 billion dollars in worldwide revenues.

Can you feel the love tonight? Because we certainly can!

The remake of Disney’s The Lion King is set to be released in just a few weeks’ time, with excitement levels practically as high as Pride Rock.

A new teaser for the film has now been released which features one the most classic songs from the original — “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”.

The song, which was written and performed by Elton John and Tim Rice, went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The just-released teaser includes the new version of the track which is sung by Donald Glover who plays Simba and Beyoncé who lends her voice to Nala.

Visuals from the forthcoming film — including of the future king and queen lying beside one another — can be seen as the melodious ballad plays and is interspersed with Mufasa teaching young Simba about his ancestors.

All the love will be felt when The Lion King opens on July 19th.

Disney has finally dropped the first full trailer for its live-action remake of The Lion King.

Less than two minutes long, the trailer features scenes from Simba’s birth and the African savannah, Simba and Nala exploring the elephant graveyard, Simba’s exile at the encouragement of his uncle Scar and a glimpse of Simba, Pumbaa and Timon singing together.

The trailer confirms that the remake is an almost shot-by-shot take on the classic 1994 animated film.

The film, directed by Jon Favreau (The Jungle Book), features a star-studded cast including Donald Glover (Simba), Beyoncé (Nala), Seth Rogan (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Scar), John Oliver (Zazu), and James Earl Jones (returning to voice Mufasa).

The Lion King is one of three Disney classics that got the live-action treatment to hit cinemas this year with Tim Burton’s Dumbo released last month and Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin set to hit theaters in May.
