Paramount has reportedly tapped Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger to develop a script for the sequel, while Joseph Kosinski is expected to direct it. Top Gun 3 won’t get off the ground until Cruise and the studio signed off on the final version, and the Maverick young cast, led by Miles Teller and Glen Powell, are yet to confirm their involvement.

The news comes just a few days after Cruise signed a non-exclusive deal to develop franchises and original movies for Warner Bros. He’s also in business with Paramount on the eighth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, in addition to plotting Doug Liman’s space movie with NASA at Universal.

Top Gun: Maverick made quite a splash when it hit the theatres in 2022, and went on to become the highest-grossing of Cruise’s career, with $1.496 billion grossed worldwide. It also won numerous awards and scored six Academy Awards nominations, including best picture.

Cruise and Warner Bros. go a way back, and he starred in multiple high-profile projects for the studio, including his hit movies The Last Samurai, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, and Interview with the Vampire. Waddingham revealed she spent “five intense days” on the fighter carrier alongside Cruise while filming the eighth Mission: Impossible film—and he made every minute count.

The Hollywood legend celebrated his 60th birthday on July 3, marking the special occasion at the British F1 Grand Prix. As a noted fan of the sport, Cruise was at the event to support his friend Lewis Hamilton who came third in the race.

Those who could not be with the Top Gun: Maverick star on his big day sent their well wishes via social media.

“Happy Birthday Mav @TomCruise from Ice,” Val Kilmer tweeted, referencing his Top Gun character. Fellow co-star, Glen Powell, also wished the actor a happy day with a photo from the film which showed that Cruise is still able to hang off planes despite being in his sixth decade.

We’re hoping that Tom indulged in the signature cake that he famously sends his celebrity friends as a holiday gift.

“He gives me this cake every Christmas. We call it the Cruise Cake. It’s just this coconut cake. It’s the best coconut cake I’ve ever had in my life,” said Kristen Dunst of the White Chocolate Coconut Bundt Cake from Doan’s Bakery in Woodland Hills, California.

The 60-year-old actor previously revealed that he does not eat sugar while training, and so sends the cake to everyone else.

Only a quick glance at the box office numbers is needed to see that the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster is a massive success. After premiering at ComicCon on April 28th, Top Gun: Maverick hit cinemas a month later and has so far earned more than $282 million worldwide.

Not only does the impressive figure make it the seventh highest-grossing film of the year, but the opening weekend gross of $160.5 million set the record for Memorial Day weekend, as well as being Tom Cruise’s highest opening of all time.

However, it seems that the action star wasn’t initially on board with reprising his role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

“I basically had 30 minutes to pitch this film, which I didn’t realise when we were flying over; but when I got there, I found that Tom really didn’t want to make another Top Gun,” revealed director, Joseph Kosinski.

The pair had previously worked together on 2013’s Oblivion, and so Kosinski knew how to go about convincing the Mission: Impossible actor…

“[I] knew to start with character and emotion,” the director said. “I just pitched this idea of Bradley Bradshaw growing up to become a naval aviator, and him and Maverick having this fractured relationship that had never been repaired.”

Each has been delayed several times over the last year and half because of low movie theater attendance levels. The latest delay comes from the country’s surge in COVID-19 cases. This has made it difficult for big-budget films like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 to profit theatrically.

Moments after Paramount took Top Gun: Maverick off of the November 19, 2021 date, Sony pushed Ghostbusters: Afterlife from its November 11, 2021 spot to that date.

While this is a huge blow to cinemas, other studios have big movies scheduled this year including Universal’s Dear Evan Hansen, MGM’s No Time to Die, Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Disney and Marvel’s Eternals, 20th Century Studios’ West Side Story, and Warner Bros. The Matrix 4.

Cruise plans to collaborate with NASA and Elon Musk’s Space X to shoot a movie in space were reported earlier this year. Up until now, however, there was no studio attached to the project as a distributor. Now, Variety reports, Universal Pictures is negotiating to play that role.

This project is a risk for the studio as its budget is expecting to pass the 200 million dollar mark. Cruise himself is due to earn 30-60 million dollars as the star and the producer. He will also get a percentage of the movie’s gross. It is unknown which other studios, if any, are in the running but two major stream services are out of consideration.

The movie will also see Cruise collaborating again with director Doug Liman who signed up to helm the project. Other than that, not much is known about the project as there is no script written. It seems that Universal is banking on the buzz that the ambitious project is obviously going to pay off in the end.
