Top Gun: Maverick already shattered box office records and became the highest-grossing film of 2022 and it’s now turning into a true streaming hit. After premiering on Paramount+, it became the streamer’s most-watched movie during its premiere weekend.

Top Gun: Maverick premiered 36 years after the original film and reunited us with Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who must confront the ghosts of his pasts while guiding a group of younger Top Gun graduates on their path to becoming successful pilots.

In addition to Cruise, the film also starred Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. It premiered on May 27 and grossed $1.488 billion worldwide, before premiering on Paramount+ on December 22 to become the most watched-movie on this platform.

Brian Robbins, president, and CEO of Paramount Pictures said that the streaming success of Maverick proves that their studio has unlocked the value of variable windowing that streaming provides to augment a film’s overall success.

“The runaway success of this film across theatrical, digital, and now in streaming is an undeniable proof point demonstrating the power of Paramount’s multi-platform release strategy,” said Robbins.
