After the classic 1971 version starring Gene Wilder and the 2005 remake by Tim Burton, the iconic Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is getting a TV adaptation.

Netflix has announced that a series will be developed by none other than Oscar-winning director Taika Waititi. Waititi, who is best-known for Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, will write, direct, and executive produce an animated series based on characters from the book. It’s still unclear whether it will be a direct adaptation of the book, a prequel, or a sequel.

And if that is not enough, the streaming service has further announced that Waititi will make yet another spin-off animated series of the book. This second series will be a “wholly original take” on the Oompa Loompas—the mysterious orangy workers in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory.

No release date has been stated for either of the two animated series.

“The shows will retain the quintessential spirit and tone of the original story while building out the world and characters far beyond the pages of the Dahl book for the very first time,” Netflix said.

Netflix also stated that it aims to adapt more of the classic writer works to TV. So we can expect adaptations of The Twits, Matilda, The BFG, and more in the future.
