This past week has been truly epic for fans of The 1975. Shortly after revealing the release date and tracklist of their upcoming album, the British band surprised us with something even better—a music video for the lead single “The Part of the Band”.

The group’s fifth studio album Being Funny in a Foreign Language is being released on October 14 by Dirty Hit and Polydor Records. It will feature a total of 11 tracks and the band gave us a taste of things to come by releasing the first single “The Part of the Band”.

The 1975 teased the release of this record through a series of black and white billboards. They featured snippets of the song’s lyrics, starting with, “She was part of the air force / I was part of the band.”

According to Matty Healy’s recent Reddit AMA, it arose from the song “New York”, which he performed while opening a concert for Phoebe Bridgers in 2021.

“I love the song and it didn’t have a bridge… The bridge was written by me. And then became ‘Part of the Band’. ‘New York’ will be finished eventually but is not a song of The 1975,” explained Healy on Reddit.

“The Part of the Band” saw The 1975 join forces with the superstar producer Jack Antonoff, while Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast was credited as a contributing vocalist.
