The Black Phone emerged as one of the most popular horror movies of the last year—and there’s more where that came from! After the first film became a commercial and critical hit, Universal Pictures announced another one and its release date has been set for summer 2025.

The Black Phone 2 is still in the early stages of development, and it’s unclear if the director Scott Derrickson will return. It’s safe to assume Ethan Hawke will come back as the main villain, the Grabber, but the rest of the cast will most likely look different.

The Black Phone became a surprise sleeper hit after hitting the theaters last summer and earned $161 million worldwide on an 18 million budget. Derrickson correctly predicted its earnings in an interview with Comic Book and revealed he already discussed the sequel with Joe Hill, the author of the short story that served as inspiration for this horror.

“Joe Hill pitched me a wonderful idea for a sequel to Black Phone that, if this movie does well, I’m gonna do it… Joe’s very protective and personal about his material, but he came to me with the idea and I was like, ‘That’s how you do a sequel to Black Phone. That’s terrific,'” he told Comic Book.

The Black Phone 2 will be released on June 27, 2025, and Universal Pictures is yet to share additional details about this project.
