Almost two decades after the Oscar-winning thriller The Constant Gardener took Hollywood by storm, another adaptation is in the works. The Ink Factory is developing a new limited series based on John le Carré’s hit novel, set in the post-pandemic context.
His Dark Materials scribe Lydia Adetunji is in charge of writing the new adaptation, and she agreed to jump on board because she “adores the passionate love story and gripping thriller” of Le Carré’s original 2001 novel.
The Constant Gardener chronicles the journey of a British diplomat Justin Quayle, who embarks on a dangerous journey to solve the murder of his activist wife Tessa. The novel was previously adapted into the 2005 movie of the same name starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz, who won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her performance.
The Ink Factory is plotting this limited series, and its CEOs Simon and Stephen Cornwell described Lydia Adetunji’s new adaptation as intensely relevant in the modern world.
“It’s thrilling to be reinterpreting The Constant Gardener in a contemporary, post-pandemic context, and to be rooting the story in an authentic, modern Kenya with all of its richness, politics, and energy,” said the duo in a joint statement.
