“The High Note” Trailer: Tracee Ellis Ross Plays a Music Icon

Ice Cube, Dakota Johnson, and Tracee Ellis Ross in "The High Note"

The first trailer for The High Note shows that Tracee Ellis Ross knows about the glamours life of singing legends—after all, she is the daughter to the iconic Diana Ross.

Ellis, a Golden Globe-winning and three-time Emmy nominated actress best known for starring in Black-ish, Mixed-ish, and Girlfriends plays Grace Davis, a singer who is in a crossroads in her music career when her manager (Ice Cube) gives her a career-defining choice. Maggie (Dakota Johnson) Grace’s overworked assistant helps her come up with a plan to change her career around.

Also starring in The High Note are Kelvin Harrison Jr., Zoe Chao, Eddie Izzard, Bill Pullman, and Diplo.

“In all honesty, none of this is taken from the world I know of being my mom’s child,” Ellis told EW.

“The only thing is that I always had the dream of being able to sing. But this character was so beautifully and wonderfully written, and the story really has nothing to do with any of the things that I know from my mom’s experience. Except for the fact that there’s a real humanity to this woman and she’s not a paper-thin quote-unquote diva that the world usually paints larger-than-life women as. She’s a real person.”

The High Note is set to hit theatres on May 8. Until then, check out the trailer below.
