Donald Sutherland, who cemented his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most prolific actors over the course of the past six decades, passed away at 88. His impressive filmography includes around 200 projects, spanning from M*A*S*H to The Hunger Games franchise.
The Canadian actor passed away at 88 after a long illness, and his son Kiefer Sutherland took it upon himself to share the news with the world. He called him one of the most important actors in the history of film who “loved what he did and did what he loved” in an emotional social media post where he reflected on his legacy.
Sutherland has been acting since the 60s, and we’ve seen him star in almost 200 projects since getting his big break with roles in The Dirty Dozen and M*A*S*H. Mainstream audiences know him best as President Snow in The Hunger Games franchise, but his filmography also includes such projects as Don’t Look Now (1973), Animal House (1978), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Ordinary People (1980), The Italian Job (2003), and Pride & Prejudice (2005).
Sutherland won many prestigious accolades over the years, including one Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globes. He was never nominated for an Oscar in competitive categories, but eventually received an Academy Honorary Award in 2017.
