New York Film Festival is less than two months away, and it’s shaping up to be truly amazing. The full lineup is yet to be revealed, but masterminds behind this prestigious event finally found its opening film in Martin Scorsese’s highly-anticipated crime drama The Irishman.

This will be Scorsese’s first film to ever open this festival, and famed director said it’s “an incredible honor” to be entrusted with this task.

“I greatly admire the bold and visionary selections that the festival presents to audiences year after year. The festival is critical to bringing awareness to cinema from around the world. I am grateful to have the opportunity to premiere my new picture in New York alongside my wonderful cast and crew,” said Scorsese in a statement.

New York Film Festival will kick off on September 27th, but it’s still unclear when we can expect to see The Irishman in the theaters. Netflix reportedly paid $125 million for the rights to distribute this film, and experts believe they’ll give it a theatrical release before making it available to users of their streaming service.
