The Jerry Springer Show quietly bowed out from our TV screens; a sheer contrast to the show’s loud and explosive nature. Associated Press confirmed on Thursday that NBC decided to pull the plug on the show and stop the production of new episodes. The network opted against calling the move “cancelation,” and refers to it as an “indefinite hiatus.”
There is an unknown number of unaired The Jerry Springer Show episodes, which will find their way on television through reruns on networks which bought the show for syndication. According to AP, producers of the show said that “there is a possibility” of making new original episodes in the future, but that doesn’t seem like a realistic option. In the end, it might not even matter that much.
“There was a time that Jerry Springer was running at a minimum of two times a day,” Bill Carroll, a veteran analyst of the syndication market, told AP. “Realistically, I don’t think the audience is able to look at the show and say, ‘that’s one from this year, or two years ago or four years ago.’ It has become so homogenous.”
The Jerry Springer Show has been around for 27 years with more than 4,000 episodes being aired during that period. Hosted by former politician Jerry Springer, this tabloid talk show was known for covering controversial topics and encouraging fights and brawls between its guests. At one point in the ’90s, The Jerry Springer Show was one of the most popular daytime shows on television.
