If you’re a huge fan of historical fiction, The Last Kingdom is probably one of your favorite shows on Netflix—but all good things must come to an end. This series will soon return for its fifth season, and this will also be the final chapter of Uhtred’s epic journey.

Based on Bernard Cornwell’s book series The Saxon Stories, The Last Kingdom centered on the fictional protagonist Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Born to a Saxon nobleman, but raised by the Danes, he must choose between the country of his birth and the place of his upbringing, as he fights to reclaim his birthright.

Alexander Dreymon, who played the role of Uhtred throughout the series, couldn’t be more excited about the fifth season—especially since he’s set to make his directorial debut in one of the episodes. “I’m truly grateful to have been given the opportunity to direct. In doing so, I came to fully appreciate the spectacular talent and skill of our cast and crew even more. I can’t wait to share it with our fans, without whom none of this would be possible,” he said in a statement.

The Last Kingdom started its life on BBC 2 in 2015, but it eventually moved to Netflix after two seasons. The production of the final season is currently underway, but it still doesn’t have an official premiere date.
