June may be out of Gilead, but it doesn’t seem as though her life is about to be any easier.
The act of revenge which June and her fellow handmaids inflicted on Commander Waterhouse at the end of the last season of The Handmaid’s Tale seems to have created an even greater monster.
In the chilling trailer for the forthcoming fifth season, Waterford’s widow, Serena, appears to loom large and powerful. She and June have always been at odds, and it looks as though that Cold War is about to get even icier.
“I want her to know that it was me,” June says in response to Serena assuming the role of grieving wife. “She knows the world is watching.”
June is also being watched, as US government, Mark Tuello reminds her: “A handmaid killing her commander — Gilead is not going to let that stand.“
The official synopsis for Season 5 states, “June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power. June, Luke, and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.”
The Handmaid’s Tale is set to return on September 14.
