The Old Guard is one of Netflix’s most successful original films to date, and it was just a matter of time before the streaming giant announced its follow-up. The sequel of this superhero film is officially in development, with the original cast set to return for another round.
The Old Guard premiered in summer 2020 and followed a team of immortal mercenaries embarking on a dangerous revenge mission in an attempt to keep their identity a secret. The cast of the original film included Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, and Veronica Ngo, and they’re all expected to return for the sequel.
Gina Prince-Bythewood won’t return to direct the follow-up, but The Old Guard 2 will be in good hands with Victoria Mahoney. The up-and-coming filmmaker said she was genuinely blown away by the collective levels of talent, skill, and savvy involved in the first movie, and she’s honored to continue telling this story.
“I must’ve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement–being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences,” said Mahoney in a statement.
