“The Queen’s Gambit” Scores the Biggest Opening for Limited Netflix Series

The Queen’s Gambit is the latest Netflix series that’s got everyone talking and its viewership numbers reflect its huge popularity. The streaming giant reported the chess drama is its biggest scripted limited series to date, with 62 million households tuning in to watch in less than a month.

Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s vice president of original series, praised the director and writer Scott Frank for bringing this critically acclaimed period drama to life with his talented cast and crew.

“It’s a true testament to Scott’s skill as a writer and filmmaker that he was able to bring the drama and detail of the many chess matches to life on camera. Scott also had tremendous help from the series’ talented crafts team,” said Friedlander in a statement.

The Queen’s Gambit stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the fictional chess prodigy Beth Harmon, as she tries to establish herself as the world’s best chess player while straggling with addiction and childhood trauma. The critically acclaimed series premiered on Netflix on October 23rd, and its cast also includes Bill Camp, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Moses Ingram, Harry Melling, and Marielle Heller.
