This is Why We Didn’t Get to See the Creatures in “Bird Box”

Sandra Bullock, Julian Edwards, and Vivien Lyra Blair in "Bird Box"

The latest Netflix thriller Bird Box has been receiving rave reviews. The film follows Sandra Bullock on a quest to survive the arrival of mysterious creatures which take on the form of your worse fear and consequently drive you to suicide.

While some feel that the fact we do not see what the creatures look like worked well, others were left disappointed that there was no big reveal. Now, screenwriter Eric Heisserer has revealed that a scene did show what the creatures looked like, but it was deleted later on.

He said: “There was a time when one of the producers was like, ‘No, you have to see something at some point’ and forced me to write essentially a nightmare sequence where Malorie experiences one in that house.”

Sandra Bullock was afraid to see what the creature would look like but admits that when they bought it out, it did not look how she expected. She revealed: “It was snake-like, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to see it when it first happens. Just bring it into the room. We’ll shoot the scene.’ I turn and he’s like this [growling at me.] It’s making me laugh. It was just a long fat baby.”

In the end, director Susanne Bier was forced to delete the scene due to the fact that it “so easily becomes funny.”
