We won’t be getting The Sopranos revival or reboot (which is definitely for the best) but a prequel movie is coming our way. David Chase, the man who created The Sopranos, has written a screenplay alongside Lawrence Konner (The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire) for a prequel movie titled The Many Saints of Newark. According to Deadline, New Line Cinema studio has purchased the script and will put the movie in production.

The Many Saints of Newark will be set during the Newark riots in the ’60s, focusing on the conflicts between African-American and the Italian gangsters. Some of the characters from the series will be featured in the movie, possibly Tony Soprano’s father, Giovanni “Johnny Boy,” and Tony’s uncle Junior.

“David is a masterful storyteller and we, along with our colleagues at HBO, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit, and enlarge, the Soprano universe in a feature film,” said Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich about the project.

The Sopranos originally ran on HBO from 1999 to 2007, for six seasons with 86 episodes. The show revolved around Italian American mobster Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) and focused on his struggles to balance his personal life with his job of running a criminal organization. Besides Gandolfini, the series also starred Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, Steven Van Zandt, Michael Imperioli, Dominic Chianese, and Steve Schirripa. The Sopranos went on to become a huge hit and a critics’ favorite. It is still regarded as one of the greatest TV series of all time, with numerous publications ranking it as the best TV series ever. It also won numerous awards during its original run, including 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, and two Peabody Awards.
