Despite already being completed, The Spiderwick Chronicles series on Disney+ won’t get to see the light of day. The streaming giant is not going forward with the new adaptation of the hit fantasy book of the same name due to cost-cutting efforts.

The Spiderwick Chronicles book series previously produced a 2008 film starring Freddie Highmore, but the new adaptation was expected to dive deeper into the source material. The show’s cast included Christian Slater, Jack Dylan Grazer, Lyon Daniels, Noah Cottrell, Joy Bryant, and Mychala Lee.

The Spiderwick Chronicles has already been completed and it was supposed to feature a total of eight episodes before Disney pulled the plug. Not all hope has been lost just yet, and the series is currently being shopped, with Paramount+ emerging as one of the potential buyers.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is only the latest victim of Disney’s cost-cutting efforts, and their CFO Christine McCarthy previously said they’re “expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.”

“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation. As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms,” McCarthy explained in a statement.
