After a lot of anticipation, The Super Mario Bros. Movie finally hit the theaters last week and it exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations. It grossed $377 million worldwide during its opening weekend, setting several major box office records in its wake.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie over-performed during its opening weekend, significantly exceeding projection numbers. It managed to gross $204.6 million domestically and earned $173 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $377.6 million.

This project managed to set several major records thanks to its impressive opening numbers. It passed Frozen 2‘s $358 million opening to score the biggest worldwide opening for an animated film. It also had the biggest opening for a film based on a video game, the biggest opening of 2023, and the third-highest Easter opening weekend of all time.

Universal’s domestic distribution chief Jim Orr reflected on the film’s huge success and described it as an extraordinary big-screen celebration for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

“The incredible partnership of Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto’s iconic characters, with Illumination and Chris Meledandri’s unbeatable filmmaking and storytelling prowess, has led to this combustible moment at the worldwide box office,” said Orr in a statement.
