After the upcoming Season 11 on AMC, The Walking Dead is coming to an end with a spinoff series about Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier in the works.

Season 11 of the show will air over two years and will consist of 24 episodes that will begin in late 2021. Previously it was announced that an additional six episodes would be added to Season 10 and that they’ll be shot and aired in early 2021. The episode that was supposed to be the Season 10 finale is set to air on October 4.

The spinoff is still untitled and it will star Norman Reedus’ Daryl and Melissa McBride’s Carol, who are also the only two characters who’ve been in the show since Season 1.

The show is co-created by The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang and Scott Gimple, the former series showrunner and the chief content officer of The Walking Dead universe. Kang will also serve as showrunner for the spinoff, which will debut in 2023, and plot details are still unknown.

“I look forward to digging in with our brilliant writers, producers, directors, cast and crew to bring this epic final chapter of Robert Kirkman’s story to life for our fans over the next two years,” said Kang.

“‘The Walking Dead’ flagship series has been my creative home for a decade and so it’s bittersweet to bring it to an end, but I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol. Working with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride has been a highlight of my career and I’m thrilled that we get to keep telling stories together.”

In other Walking Dead news, Gimpe is currently developing an episodic anthology series titled Tales of the Walking Dead which will feature one-off episodes with new and existing characters in The Walking Dead universe.

AMC also has the companion series Fear the Walking Dead, which is set to air its sixth season on October 11. The Walking Dead: World Beyond, about the first generation during the zombie apocalypse, will air on October 4 after The Walking Dead.

AMC’s still airing the aftershow Talking Dead hosted by Chris Hardwick. AMC and Universal Pictures are working on a series of feature films about Rick Grimes played by Andrew Lincoln.
